Dr. Paul Krois serves as chief scientist for safety and human factors for Crown Consulting Inc. In this role, he leads the integration of in-time safety management and human factors with advanced air mobility (AAM) concepts and modernization of air traffic control systems.

Krois is a key thought leader for NASA’s System-Wide Safety (SWS) Project in its development of an in-time safety management concept for AAM, including urban air mobility (UAM). He has authored numerous conference papers and works with the Federal Aviation Administration through the SWS Research Transition Team developing a joint NASA/FAA concept of operations for in-time safety management.

Krois joined Crown in 2019 after 20 years as program director, deputy manager and program manager at the FAA’s NextGen Human Factors Research and Engineering Division. His leadership and technical expertise contributed to development of new guidance for the design and implementation of NextGen operational improvements, as well as high-priority research on today’s operational systems through collaboration with researchers at NASA, industry and academia.
An internationally recognized expert in human factors, he worked with ICAO to develop its Manual on Human Performance for Regulators (Doc 10151). He worked for Crown before joining FAA, leading a human-in-the-loop simulation with air traffic controllers testing new graphical user interfaces at the EUROCONTROL Experimental Center in Paris and leading human factors in the development of new air traffic control systems.

Krois holds a Ph.D. in industrial psychology from Colorado State University and a Master of Science in Human Factors Psychology from the University of South Dakota. He is certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP) from the Project Management Institute (PMI) and is a certified Part 107 pilot.
