Crown Consulting Inc. aerospace engineer Mohamad Refai has been awarded NASA’s Exceptional Public Achievement Medal for his contribution as the software lead for the detect and avoid (DAA) modeling and simulation team supporting the agency’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration in the National Airspace System (UAS Integration in the NAS) Project.
The award is one of NASA’s highest honors for a contractor and recognizes excellent support and great impact to NASA missions.
Refai’s work to develop the NASA DAA software platform allowed the Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Department of Defense laboratories, and the unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) industry execute simulations and research evaluations.
His service as the co-lead for the SC-228 Display and Guidance subgroup enabled the committee to complete the Minimum Operational Performance Standards (MOPS) for detect and avoid for future UAS systems.
