Project Overview

Crown’s 20-plus years of systems engineering support to the Systems Approach to Aviation Safety (SASO) Program has advanced the Federal Aviation Administration’s flagship initiative to integrate system safety management into its operations and promote proactive, risk-based safety oversight.

SASO implements significant changes in flight inspection procedures and in parallel develops a new automated safety oversight mechanism, the Safety Analysis System (SAS).

Crown helped SASO become the first aviation system program to integrate systems engineering processes from the FAA’s Acquisition Management System.

Our assistance, critical to shepherding SASO through four successful capital investment reviews, has: included:

  • Developing disciplined processes to set and manage system requirements and identify safety risk indicators to target inspection activities.
  • Authoring and implementing engineering guidance, including requirements, configuration and change management, integrated program plan, cost basis of estimate, business case, risk register and implementation strategy.
  • Structuring and overseeing cost and schedule baselines according to program milestones and investment objectives and against prescribed performance metrics.
